"Always read a book that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it."

The Cry of the Sloth
Sam Savage
I just finished reading this book and can't stop thinking about it. As the back of the book describes, it is a cautionary tale sharing the dreams of the "artistic life and the loneliness and madness that accompany it." I especially admire the way Savage presented the material; it is very creative and effective. The entire book is a compilation of letters written by Andy, the protagonist. Through these letters, and most of them are quite humorous, we watch as Andy wrestles with growing debt, low self-esteem, and writer's block which lead him to his eventual deterioration. Perhaps the book hit me so hard, because I too am an aspiring artist and also struggle with low and lost times. Though I like to think I am not as crazy as the protagonist, I can glimpse myself in some of his rants and confessions. Any person who strives and fights for their dreams can relate with Andy's troubles and (hopefully) be inspired by this novel.
